Technology Dependencies Belong in Your Continuity Exercise

Updated October 4, 2026. This leadership planning perspective replaces the original cybersecurity and Internet of Things article.
A school’s ability to operate may depend on learning platforms, contact records, building systems, identity access, payment processes, and third-party services. Technical security is essential, but leaders also need to understand what happens to the mission when a system is unavailable.
Map dependencies with your technology team. Identify essential functions, the systems that support them, and the people authorized to make decisions. Ask which records and communication options will remain available during disruption.
Practice the operational decisions. A tabletop can explore loss of a learning platform, interruption of normal messaging, or prolonged vendor unavailability. Ask how staff will coordinate, which work can continue, and what alternatives have actually been tested.
Keep responsibilities clear. Technical diagnosis and remediation belong with qualified technology and cybersecurity professionals. Leadership teams own operational priorities, stakeholder communications, support coordination, and continuity decisions in collaboration with those specialists.
Connect restoration to recovery. A restored system does not automatically resolve missed work, staff workload, or community uncertainty. Plan the communication and review needed after service returns.
AJ Edwards Consulting facilitates organizational planning and exercises that connect these responsibilities. Request a consultation: [email protected] | (917) 565-7341.
