School Crisis Leadership: Prepare for What Continues

School Crisis Leadership: Prepare for What Continues

Updated October 4, 2026. This school leadership perspective replaces the original online coaching article.

A school crisis does not end when the immediate response ends. Leaders may need to sustain learning, coordinate support, make staffing decisions, communicate with families, and guide a community whose needs keep changing.

Prepare: Clarify decision authority, essential functions, communication pathways, and support coordination. Use exercises to examine the transition from immediate response into continuity and recovery.

Respond: Define who coordinates operations, who communicates, who maintains decision records, and who connects the organization with qualified support.

Continue: Restoring a schedule is one milestone. Review capacity, workload, essential services, and the psychological and organizational effects that may remain. Recovery does not follow the same timetable for everyone.

Recover: Establish review points, communicate what is known and uncertain, assign improvement actions, and adapt support and operations as needs change.

AJ Edwards Consulting’s emerging Mental Health Continuity framework connects these four stages. It is being refined through structured feedback and complements clinical support. No validated effectiveness or institutional endorsement is implied.
